Chapter 01 / OriginBorn in a Blackout, Over Duck
At Thanksgiving at his friend Nate's house, the meal was a turducken: turkey, duck, and chicken stacked into a culinary dare. The power went out just as dinner was ready. By candlelight, a revelation emerged: “Duck is the bacon of poultry.”
Asked who said it, the speaker replied with a name invented on the spot: Judd Pilsen. Part Judd Nelson, part former teacher Ms. Pilsen, entirely accidental. Had the power failed before the bird finished cooking, history might have taken a different course.
Chapter 02 / Unlicensed destinyThe Internet Found the Wrong Audience
A comedy song called “The Blowjob Machine” went up on SoundCloud under a Creative Commons license. Suddenly, it was drawing roughly 10,000 plays a day. The mystery was solved by a listener: the acoustic song had been used in a decidedly extreme adult video.
The video reportedly reached two million views. Judd, then trying to keep his music career separate from his day job, was considerably less thrilled than the analytics suggested.
Chapter 03 / Close callThe Superintendent's Playlist
After a breakup, an ex reportedly contacted Judd's school pretending to be an upset parent and forwarded a list of his most outrageous comedy song titles to the superintendent.
The superintendent noticed the complaint didn't add up: nobody by that name appeared in school records. The meeting was a terrifying career-in-jeopardy moment, not a punchline. In retrospect, it is also a rather strong argument for having a stage name.
Chapter 04 / Live entertainmentBetsy vs. the Heckler
At a tiny birthday gathering at Winters Tavern in Pacifica, a drunken heckler approached Judd mid-set. Trapped behind a microphone stand, music stand, cables, and a guitar, Judd calculated the potential equipment damage.
Then Betsy appeared from the darkness and delivered a much more efficient solution: “Sit the fuck down.” The man eventually left. Judd finished the remaining songs. The equipment survived.
Chapter 05 / A proper gigAbout Last Night
Two fellow open-mic performers recommended Judd when a new comedy show needed a musical comedian. About Last Night invited people onstage to recount awkward, absurd, and disastrous romantic encounters.
Judd served as the resident musician: a late-night talk-show band reduced to one man, improvising songs and musical exits for the storytellers, with occasional solo performances. The often-packed Make-Out Room show also reached the Palace of Fine Arts black box theater for a Valentine's Day special.
Chapter 06 / Studio loreFrom Thanksgiving to Prairie Sun
Nate, whose Thanksgiving table witnessed the name's creation, was also a recording engineer. Judd later recorded with him at Prairie Sun Studios. Nate's engineering background included work connected to Tom Waits' Mule Variations.
Some people have a producer. Judd has an origin-story witness with studio credentials.
